The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), created in 2010, is the fruit of an innovative alliance between ”la Caixa” Foundation, hospitals, academic institutions and government bodies to contribute to the efforts undertaken by the international community to address the challenges in global health. In October 2019, ISGlobal was accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence.
ISGlobal is a consolidated hub of excellence based on internationally recognised research that has grown out of work first started in the world of healthcare (Hospital Clínic and the Parc de Salut MAR) and in the academic sphere (University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University). The institute has now amassed over 30 years of experience in the field of global health. The mechanism of its work model is the transfer of knowledge generated by scientific research, a task carried out by the Training and Analysis and Global Development departments.
ISGlobal's mission is to improve global health and promote health equity through excellence in research and the translation and application of knowledge. The ultimate goal of the Institute’s work is to help close the gaps in health disparities between and within different regions of the world.
The projects undertaken by ISGlobal are focused on two large research areas: infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases and their link with the environment. The Institute is currently driving new research programmes employing more than 400 scientists and medical professionals:
Malaria
Chagas, parasitic and imported diseases
Viral and bacterial infections
Maternal, child and reproductive health
Air pollution and urban environment
Non-communicable diseases and environment
Childhood and environment
Climate and health
